What to look for when buying a coffee maker?

Q. I'd like to buy a coffee maker (the espresso type) but they're a bit pricey on average £250. I have however seen others for around £100 and wondered what the difference is and what I should look out for.

A. There's a huge difference between pump and steam espresso machines, and the bars of pressure in the machines (needed to compact the grounds when brewing). I had a cheap Melitta before; and now have a DeLonghi Magnifica 3300 which is unbelievable! It has a water reservoir and a bean reservoir; grinds beans fresh for each cup. In addition, you can make multiple cups, without waiting for the machine to "cool down" (a con with cheaper machines). It has a great frother too; and a reservoir to hold use grinds, so you aren't emptying them after each cup (another con with cheaper machines). ... Check out the stats for the Magnifica 3300. Yes, it's pricey, but you can find it New on eBay (with warranty & still in box), and it's rated the highest of just about any other machine.......

Coffee maker, why does my coffee clog in the filter basket and not go completely through?

Q. I have just bought a new coffee maker. The make is DeLonghi. It has one of those permanent filters and not the paper ones you throw away. It said on the instructions that you use 2 scoops of ground coffee for 2 cups, 4 for 4 and so on. It doesn't matter how many cups i make, at the end of it, a lot of coffee is still in the filter and hasn't gone through properly. This is my first time using one of these. Maybe i am doing something wrong but i've been going by the instructions. I'd be grateful for any help. If anymore info is needed, just ask. Thank you
Thanks to all who answered. It doesn't say in the manual that i can use paper filters. I think i will buy a finer ground coffee and see if that works.
Thanks again!

A. Try replacing it with a new one. If the problem still persists, you could write to the company and see what they would say about it. It could have something to do with the model you're using or maybe the grounds aren't fine enough.

What do you think of the Tassimo coffee maker?
Q. Compared to the others, if you know them too?

A. I'm afraid I have no experience of the Tassimo, but I bought myself the Douwe Egberts Senseo about 2 months ago. I absolutely love it, it's so simple and the coffee is always consistently lovely.

Having looked at the Tassimo website, I think it looks just as easy to operate and just as delicious coffee as the senseo machine. So the decision may come down to price - of both the machine and the refills. That's my only disappointment with my machine - the refill packs are more expensive than I thought they'd be. Have a look in the supermarket before you buy to get an idea of the cost involved with the Tassemo system.

Are the new coffee makers compatible with each other?
Q. Are coffee makers like Tassimo and Senseo compatible, so that if you use a Tassimo, say, you could use Senseo coffee? Or do you always have to use the same coffee as the coffee maker itself?

A. If you want to know if a coffee capsule from one make will fit another well NO, it is done an purpose, so you buy the coffee capsule that goes with that machine, the NESPRESSO range is quite expensive for a cup, The best way if you want to try different brands is the type of machine that uses the round tea bag type portions as they are the same in all that type of machine, take a good look before you buy and work out how much each coffee portion costs , you will be surprised.

How to stop my coffee maker from falling?
Q. I have bought a Bialetti expresso pot, but find that it only just sits on the gas hob. Today it fell off and spilt hot coffee everywhere. Does anyone know if I can buy something to fit on the gas hob so that it will sit securely?

A. You need a gas ring reducer. See below. I use one of these rings when using a Bialetti 3 cup espresso machine.
